In North America, banders use four-letter codes for each species. These were turned into a Wordle by @hootalex. Inspired by this, and being a Scottish ringer, I decided to remix his from the codes the BTO uses.
These follow a basic schema:
For bird names that are a single word, the first five letters are used, e.g. OSPREy, dots are used where they are shorter e.g. JAY..
For two word names, the first three of the first word are used and the first two of the second, e.g. BLUe TIt
For three word names, the first two, then one, then two letters are used, e.g. GReat Spotted WOodpecker
A few don’t follow this pattern, mostly to avoid conflicts, just to keep things interesting.
All species featured have occurred in the UK, although some not very frequently. You can find a list of them on the BTO website.
There will be a different species each day, but only one per day.
Created by Rob Robinson using Glitch and adapted from BRDL which was developed by @hootalex. Disclaimer: I am not a web developer, so support may be limited if things go wrong, sorry about that.
